Luxury apartments in Courchevel and Cannes - About Cannes
Cannes has transformed over the years from a modest village of fishermen into a world-famous seaside resort.
It was put on the map by Lord Brougham, the British Lord Chancellor, who stopped there in 1834, unable to reach Italy due to a cholera outbreak in Nice. Charmed by the landscape and mild climate of what was then just a small fishing port, he built a villa there named after his daughter – Château Eléonore – and from then onwards foreigners followed suit and Cannes began being developed as a resort town.

A picturesque city located on French Riviera, Cannes is also well-known for the Cannes Film Festival that takes place there each May, It is also a very popular tourist destination in Europe. Cannes offers wonderful weather, attracting tourists all year round with its mild climate. It has a huge variety of accommodation options, restaurants and entertainment for every taste, shops for pockets deep and shallow alike, designer boutiques lining the famous La Croisette promenade, luxury cruise boats departing from the Old Port, and a host of activities, including: sightseeing, sailing, diving, fishing, cricket, golf, tennis, ballroom dancing, pétanque, not to mention the fantastic beaches. Officially the Cannes coastline is 15 kilometres long, but this includes the Lerins islands. On the mainland, the coast stretches 7.5 kilometres with its sloping sandy beaches and many excellent restaurants. In total, there are 13 public beaches, two town beaches and 33 private beaches. Le Suquet is Cannes Old Town, interspersed with old houses with vaulted entrances, small cobblestone alleyways and numerous restaurants. Walk up the rue Saint-Antoine, and if you’re feeling energetic you will be rewarded for the climb to the top of the hill with panoramic views high above Cannes, looking out on the Lerins Islands and the Esterels. At the top of the hill, there is a Gothic Provençal church, a watchtower and the Museum de la Castre.

A must see is the Forville market (Place du Marché Forville), which is open every morning except Monday. It is much more than just a fruit and vegetable market. You can find there fresh homemade pasta, dried spices and herbs, fish just off the hook, a salt stall, a mushroom seller, fresh flowers to name just a few.
Île Sainte-Marguerite (St. Marguerite Island)

The St. Marguerite Island is the largest of the two Lérins Islands, about half a mile off shore from Cannes. The island is approximately 3 kilometres in length and 900 metres across.
It is most famous for its fortress prison (the Fort Royal), in which the Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century. It took the Man in the Iron Mask 11 years to leave this tiny, forested island. The mysterious individual was believed to be of noble blood, but his identity has never been proven. His cell can be visited in the Fort of St Marguerite, now renamed the Museum of the Sea (Musée de la Mer) which also houses discoveries from shipwrecks off the island, including Roman (1st century BCE) and Saracen (10th century CE) ceramics.

Île Saint-Honorat (St. Honorat Island)

The St. Honorat Island is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length and 400 meters wide. Since the 5th century, or 410 CE to be more precise, the island has been home to Cistercian monks, who are the only inhabitants of the island. At the height of their powers, the monks used to own Cannes, Mougins, and Vallauris. Medieval vestiges remain in the stark church, which is open to the public, and in the ruins of the 11th-century monastery by the sea shore. The monks inhabit the Lérins Abbey and divide their time between prayer and producing red and white wines and honey.
